Following the SAMHSA’s Six Key Principles for a Trauma Informed Approach:

  • Safety
  • Trustworthiness and Transparency
  • Peer-centric Approach
  • Collaboration and Mutuality
  • Empowerment, Voice and Choice
  • Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues

Trauma is a widespread issue that has a variety of emotionally harmful origins. It has no boundaries in age, culture, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation. Those who have suffered trauma with lasting effects are encouraged to seek professional psychological assistance. Though not a replacement for therapy, clients are also not excluded from efforts to live life through health and wellness coaching in addition to therapy. A trauma informed approach in Health and Wellness Coaching means changing language from ‘what’s wrong with you’ to ‘Tell me about living your best life, what does that mean to you, and how would your health and wellness play a role in that?’1
